(“Trump immigration plan would foster a more prosperous, united country,” Oct. 10). I disagree. I believe the president’s plan is extremely divisive and will do great harm to our country.

Many oppose immigration and believe that immigrants bring crime and steal good jobs from Americans. Both of these assumptions have been proven factually false time and again. Others recognize that we are an aging nation of low birthrate and we need immigration to make our economy and population grow. Mr. Morici accuses Democrats of preferring an open border to win electoral advantage. It ill suits a professor from an esteemed university to make such a blatantly false statement. The facts are that under the Obama administration more than 3 million undocumented immigrants were forcibly removed, most back to Mexico. During that time, the number of immigration officials was greatly increased and security along the U.S.-Mexico border greatly enhanced. As a result, net migration from Mexico has fallen below zero since 2008. That is, more immigrants have crossed the border from the U.S. back to Mexico than have moved from Mexico to the U.S.

According to the Pew Research Center, migration from Mexico to the U.S. has declined from about 600,00 per year in 2000 to 275,00 per year in 2010 to 175,000 per year in 2014. In 2014, about 200,000 migrated from the U.S. back to Mexico. This is a situation far different than the out-of-control situation painted by our president or Mr. Morici.

I do agree with the professor that in order to maximize the benefits of immigration to our economy we should shift the emphasis from family reunification and place greater importance to employment skills and the needs of our economy.
